MAGGID/RAV

Picture
Maggid is an ancient Jewish term that has its roots in the Second Temple Jerusalem period beginning in the Fifth Century BCE. The maggid is a grassroots educator, lifting people up through wisdom, knowledge and understanding. The Maggid tells the story of our times, helping us find our place in a troubled world.

What do we do?
We learn, we teach, we facilitate, we empower, we provoke, we cooperate, we nudge.  Our purpose is to inspire ourselves and others in love of sacred texts, such that tikkun ha nefesh (repair of the soul) and tikkun olam (repair of the world) may blossom, especially as reflected through the sacred biography of our lives.  Some of us work in traditional and uniquely Jewish settings; others primarily engage with the broader world.

What do we believe?
We hold a core belief that personal stories matter, that there is a reciprocal relationship between narrative and sacred text.  Most importantly, we encourage the emergence of every individual's prophetic imagination, as developed via personal commitment to study, inquiry, and development of spiritual and ritual practice. This assists in the cultivation of personal ethics, integrity, self-knowledge, love, joy, healing, service and skillful communication. This moves us toward becoming unique and true transmitters of spiritual wisdom - into all aspects of everyday life.

There is a 16th Century kaballistic idea that every person has an inner maggid at the root of the their soul, able to hear the music of sacred text.  Today, the world is in great need of maggidic voices with the capacity to focus within while connecting to the world.
